NEWSLETTER #6 - AUGUST 2002

If you have Microsoft word, open the attachment above to see the information below in a more “reader friendly” format.

TOPICS IN THIS ISSUE:

  • Dean River/Moose Lake Lodge Combo

  • Delux West Andros Bonefish retreat

  • New Belize Video

  • Fall travel ideas and remaining openings

This is the sixth edition of our monthly newsletter with updates on great fly fishing venues and insights for our traveling fly fishers.  We want to help you match the right location with your fly fishing goals and objectives and properly prepare you to fully enjoy the experience.  We’ve been most places and pride ourselves in the ability to research new locations – and whatever unbiased information on timing and locations we can provide comes at the same cost to you as booking direct – i.e., no extra cost.

Dean River Steelhead, King Salmon, and Outstanding Dry Fly Trout Fishing – An Exciting Combination Package For July ’03.

This past July, we had several of our traveling fly fisherman visit two of British Columbia’s premier fly-in lodges, Moose Lake Lodge and their sister lodge, the Dean River steelhead camp. Reports from those that went either place were of outstanding service, comfortable and scenic surroundings, good food, and an outstanding, isolated angling environment.  The waters fished (including the Blackwater R. and the upper Dean) from Moose Lake Lodge offer some of the best dry fly fishing for native rainbow and cutthroat on the planet in early July with 50 and even 100+ fish days possible – and all on drys.  The Dean is simply the “Dean” of all the steelhead rivers with great catch rates of large, “hot”, fresh from the ocean fish.  Many of the weeks on the Dean for steelhead have been booked for years by the same “steelhead addicts” and getting space is impossible.

Leland’s Fly Fishing Adventures has made an arrangement with both lodges (same ownership) for July 4 – 11, ‘03 that allows a combination package with three full days fishing from each location.   This will combine the fast action of dry fly fishing on some of BC’s greatest rivers (all fly out adventures) and streams with the opportunity to catch the steelhead of a lifetime.  Also, that week has seen the height of the king salmon run in the Dean the last few years so the river will have both steelhead and kings available.   The price will be $4,250pp for the seven night trip and includes the charter flight from Vancouver and all the fly outs from the lodges.

THE CATCH:  We can reserve this combination package for either an intact group of six or twelve for that week only and the reservations must be confirmed by deposit before October 1.  If you have a party of two, three or four who would like to reserve this adventure, we’ll do the coordination to put fishermen together so they add up to six or twelve.  This is a very special adventure in a environment of stunning natural beauty which combines some of the greatest possibilities in the realm of fresh water fly fishing and it’s not that far from home.

Flamingo Cay – the Delux West Andros Bonefish Lodge

This is the ONLY lodge on the West Side of Andros Island.   It’s location on the West Side gives it access to fabulous flats that can’t be practically reached from the East Side of Andros (there are no roads in the area and access is only by float plane).  But it’s location is just the beginning – the lodge itself has a wealth of character reflecting the Bethell family ownership which began in the 1920’s.  For many years the lodge was held just for personal family friends and was also host to the Duke of Windsor and other celebrities, primarily for waterfowl shooting.   Today, hunting is still an attraction and can be combined with angling, but it’s the fishing that is of primary interest to us.  The operation is run by Charles Bethell III and is on our list of hosted trips for ’03.  The price of $4,700 per week (includes the float plane trip from Nassau) reflects the exclusiveness of this bonefish destination.  We have four spots still open on the trip that Josh Frazier will be hosting April 12 – 19, ’03.  Also, we can book space for any time during the year for both the fishing and the combo fishing/hunting trip.

New Belize Video

There is a new video available describing in detail the Belize fishery and how to best access all the possibilities from a Belize mothership.  This is a great personal saltwater adventure for a small group (2 to 7) of fly fishing friends or family.  If you’d like a free preview of the video, drop us a note and we’ll get you one.

Fall Adventures Still Available

Deschutes River Steelhead (9/26 – 29) float trip has availability

Three Rivers Ranch Ladies Week ( 9/7 – 13) still has space for one or two ladies.

Belize Mothership trip (Oct 13 – 20) hosted by Josh Frazier has room for one rod (could be room for 3 rods if we can access the second boat)

Christmas Island (Oct 27 – Nov 3 as well as other weeks available) has room for more rods

North Platte Lodge – this is a Rockies trout destination with large fish and it’s unique in that it fishes well even into November

New Zealand (Feb ’03) has space for one more rod (the number available may be three depending on a pending late cancellation)

Either call or drop us an e-mail if you have questions or would like more information about any of our destinations
