PERMIT SLURPING LIKE CARP ON A SCUM LINE

That’s the way Jason Lozano described his recent permit hunting experiences aboard the Meca in Belize.  The rest of the story:  Jason was on his second mothership trip with Martin McCord (he’d taken his first permit on the previous trip) and their party had spent the majority of their trip pursuing tarpon, bonefish, snook, etc and only moved the Meca south to stalk permit the last day.  Before 1:00 on the last day, Jason had 10 clean shots at permit, hooked four, and released three (10, 12, and 14 pounds).  He was using a #4 Rag Head crab pattern tied very light with small eyes so that it sunk very slowly.  Using a long, slow, pull retrieve keeping the fly near the surface, all his takes occurred with the fish chasing the crab and eating literally with “their mouth out of the water” and visible.  Almost like dry fly fishing for permit, although Jason said it more closely resembled “carp on a scum line.”
