BELIZE

It’s the water – and in Belize, it’s definitely the water and the world’s second largest barrier reef that makes this destination special.  Lots of options here – it does depend on what sort of experience you’re looking for and the make up of your group or family.

For starters, there’s what many believe to be the top saltwater adventure anywhere – the Belize Mothership Trip with Martin McCord, Charles Westby, Dean Myers, and Noel Westby.  With this trip, you and your group of 2, 3, 4, or 6 live on the shallow waters inside the reef on your own personal floating lodge – i.e., a comfortable, air conditioned, live-aboard yacht.  Behind the mothership are towed your flats skiffs from which you will pursue tarpon, bonefish, snook, barracuda, and can access the world’s finest permit flats.  Website for this adventure, one of salt water fly fishing’s greatest values, is www.flyfishbelize.com   Each year, this trip is wait-listed for most dates so early reservations are required.

There are a variety of coastal options in Belize.  For a top-of-the-line couple’s island get-away, there is Cayo Espanto.  Caye Chapel offers the unique family or group experience of a small, private island with a championship 18 hole golf course and fabulous 3 and 4 bedroom beachfront villas for rent (can combine guided fly fishing from this spot).  Ambergris Caye, as well as some of the other cayes, offer different forms of island family getaways.  For the hardcore permit fisherman looking for a rustic, permit lodge adventure, Blue Horizon is located near some of the world’s finest permit flats in Southern Belize.

The eastern edge of the Turneffe Islands is one of the most beautiful spots in the  world.  Both Turneffe Island Lodge and Turneffe Flats Lodge provide slightly different experiences if you wish to fly fish and/or dive the Turneffe atoll – both can be accessed from the Belize mainland via water taxi.
