GENERAL INFORMATION, SCHEDULES, AND OPTIONS
SPORT FISHING: Our focus is on sport fishing. Occasionally, a snook, snapper, or barracuda may be kept for the table, but all other fish are released unharmed after appropriate photographs are taken.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS: Guests fly to Belize City International Airport where they are met by a member of the staff. A fifteen minute drive will have you at the docks ready to board the mothership. A $35.00US departure tax will be collected from you at the Belize International Airport as you leave the country.
CANCELLATIONS/TRAVEL INSURANCE: We encourage you to purchase travel insurance to protect your investment in your trip should an unexpected emergency arise. Your trip dates are held exclusively for your party and, should an emergency cancellation occur, those dates are difficult to resell on short notice, hence our cancellation policy. The home page on the website www.flyfishingadventures.org has links to two different forms of travel insurance.
CURRENCY: The Belizean dollar is tied to the U.S. dollar – it’s worth half a U.S. dollar. Dollars are accepted everywhere, but change will be given in Belizean dollars.
CLOTHING: The dress is always casual in Belize and this is especially true on a Mothership trip where there are only your own friends or family with you. Dress for the tropics. Light cotton long sleeve shirts, long pants, and a wide brimmed hat will protect you from the sun when you are on the water. Two pair of the light cotton pants with zip-off legs can take care of your needs for both pants and shorts for the entire week. If your trip is during the winter, it is a good idea to have a light sweater or jacket along, even though it probably won’t get any use.
INSECTS: If tropical paradises have one drawback, it’s tropical bugs. One of the great advantages of a mothership trip is that you will seldom (most likely, not at all) be bothered by mosquitos or sandflys after you have boarded your boat. However, it’s always good to have repellent with you when traveling in the tropics.
WATER, SOFT DRINKS, BEER, LIQUOR: Soft drinks, safe drinking water, and one case of native Belizean Belikin Beer per person are included with your trip. We always ask to stop at a local grocery store on the way from the airport to the docks. This gives us a chance to pick up preferred soft drinks, wine, and liquor/mix which may not be on board (Brody’s is the best place to do this shopping). Note that almost everything in Belize City is closed on Sunday so if your arrival day is Sunday, this option may not be open to you.
TRAVEL DOCUMENTS: A valid passport is required to enter Belize.
TIPPING: Tipping is a personal thing based on service. Your crew has a reputation of going the extra mile in making your trip everything it can be. Guides put in a long day on the water and the cook/steward will work very hard to take care of your on-board needs. Normally, guides and staff are tipped upon departure. $300 to $500 per person for the week is the normal range for tips. It’s best to pool your tip money and give it directly to the captain. He splits it evenly with the staff which helps promote a team spirit in serving client needs. Please do not tip the staff individually.
RESPONSIBILITY: International fishing trips have inherent dangers that can expose you to injury or even life threatening situations. You should be aware of this. Belize Fishing Adventures and Fly Fishing Adventures acts only as an agent for contractors, owners, or outfitters. Belize Fishing Adventures and Fly Fishing Adventures or any of its affiliated companies shall not be liable or responsible in any way for any loss, injury, death or damage to any person or property regardless of the cause. If you are going to be traveling out of the United States, it is recommended that you check with your personal physician regarding precautions you should take and preparations you should make.
OPTIONS AND ANCHORAGES: While the variety of species in Belize is a great attraction, some areas have better opportunities for certain species. And, weather and water conditions can have a large influence on those opportunities. Your captain knows the best options, but it is a good idea for you to discuss the possibilities with him. Certainly, you’ll want to let him know, for instance, if you want to sample some of the better permit grounds. Normally, you’ll anchor in three or four different places during your week, depending on the fishing, weather, and your own fishing goals. Unless you opt to go to the Turneffe Islands or far south on a dedicated permit venture, the best fishing options are within 20 miles of Belize City and you will most likely see the lights of the city illuminating the horizon at night. Spending a lot of time motoring or cruising in your mothership is usually not a desirable part of the trip and won’t improve the fishing. On your first trip, it’s usually best to let the captain make the decisions on where to go while you are learning what is available and getting familiar with the fishery. Our experienced repeat clients usually have their own agenda of the areas they favor and want to spend the majority of their time, but that is based on lots of past experience and their personal preferences.
SCHEDULE ON BOARD: You can determine the schedule while on board – the crew is there to serve you. The most common schedule followed by fisherman on a Rising Tide or Meca trip is:
-
5:30-5:45am: grab a cup of coffee and get in the skiff for a 6:00am departure for the fishing areas.
-
8:30-9:00am: in for breakfast; after breakfast, out for the best sight fishing time of the day.
-
2:00-3:00pm: in for lunch after the angle of the sun makes sight fishing difficult; after lunch, an hour or two break before going out for the evening session. Fish through dusk, and when situations are right, for a while after dark.
-
After dark: dinner.
